Cybersecurity Lingo: What is a “DDoS” ?

“Distributed Denial of Service” [attack]. A DDoS attack happens when thousands or more of computers send traffic to a server — usually a website — all at the same time, overloading the bandwidth and resources to shut the site down.

DDoSes are often used as blackmail against smaller businesses who cannot afford to defend against them.

Sometimes a DDoS is used to censor websites, or to attack government websites that hackers have a grudge against.

DDoSes usually use a botnet to accomplish their purposes. You don’t need to be technical to launch a DDoS: there are websites that will sell a DDoS as a Service (DDoSaaS) to you, about $10/hour.
