I had the opportunity to hear James Lawerence speak “The Iron Cowboy” at his first public appearance since he set a world record — 100 Ironmans in 100 days. Yes. That’s right. An Ironman is a full triathlon with a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride, and a 26.2-mile run (a full marathon). Every single day for 100 days.

What I Learned From The Iron Cowboy_ JM Addington

“You are your only limit ” – James Lawerence
  1. You can do what you set your mind to. Your body and mind will do what you believe you can do. Conversely, if you believe you can’t do something, you won’t. This isn’t just for Iron Cowboys and Navy Seals. Science backs this up. Your brain always looks for things you focus on. If you focus on pain of running, your body will experience more pain. Instead, if you convince yourself to enjoy the run, your brain will subconsciously look for things it can do to help make that happen. If you focus on business growth, your mind will “see” all the opportunities all around you. If you focus on challenges, your mind will only see the obstacles.
“The need for connection and community is primal, as fundamental as the need for air, water, and food.” – Dean Ornish
  1. The Power of Great People James had an amazing team around him — first, his family was his support and the first line of help as he cut down those triathlons. His family dropped what they were doing to help James accomplish his goal. They believed as much as he did that it was possible. Then some more. And his community also came out in droves! The local bicyclists would come out and ride with him through the 112 miles — even during the snow! A local doctor found a 1 in a 1,000,000,000 solution when James injured his legs from over-use. The power of a community that supports you cannot be overstated.
“You will never win if you never begin” – Helen Rowland
  1. Just Start—You Never Know Who’s Watching We choose to show up in our lives each day. Never start, never get anywhere. James gave back to a global community in ways he never imagined. He had letters of support come in from all over the globe. One individual even planned to commit suicide but wanted to watch James finish his Ironman day after day first… then decided to live. You never know who is watching you. Most of the people you know wouldn’t cross the street for your funeral. There are many others that you will help, inspire and lead without knowing it.
